Man Overboard! A Game of Ships and Sailors
Plainfield Elementary School fifth graders in Ms. Alexa Menolascino's Physical Education class participated in a fun "Ships and Sailors" activity.
To begin the class, one of the students took the lead with stretches and warm-up exercises.
With a few stretches done, Ms. Menolascino directed the students to form a line in the center of the gym, designating one side as the "ship" and the opposite as the "sailor" side.
When she said one of those words, the students had to run to the correct side of the gym.
Ms. Menolascino would then say a phrase and the students had to perform the action related to the phrase.
For example, if she said "Captain!" they would have to salute and hold their pose until she said "at ease."
When the students were told to "hit the deck," they had to lay on the floor as quickly as they could.
"Rows in three" involved the students gathering into a group of three and pretending to row their boat.
When she yelled "overboard!" the students had to partner up, with one student laying down while another gently rested their foot on their back and saluted.
If a student didn't perform the correct activity for the phrase, then they were out of the game.
The students enjoyed playing the game and it was a great activity to do after spring break.
