Fun with Numbers
Plainfield Elementary School second graders in Mrs. Carnota's bilingual class have fun participating in various math activities each day.
The students first talk about what day it is and use the calendar grid to record various observations about the date.
They mark their papers with the date, the color, the orientation of the leaves, the leaf type and whether the day is an odd or even one.
The students then work on math problems using red and blue "counters."
For example, a student comes up to the front of the class and places a blue or red counter on the board to complete their ten count.
And it's not all sitting down. Students enjoy participating in a fun song and dance to get them moving.
Next up is learning how to tell time.
Each of the students have their own small clock and set their time to the time Mrs. Carnota gives them.
Then they use their white boards and markers to practice addition and subtraction problems together.
Mrs. Carnota calls on students and they come up to the board to show the rest of the students how to solve the problem.
The students then break up into small groups and work on problems in their math workbooks.
