Fast Pace Math Fun

Fast Pace Math Fun
Plainfield

Mrs. Deanne Riportella's first grade class had a fantastic time practicing math skills through a rotation of engaging and fast paced small group number games!

The lineup of activities for the day included the following math games: "4-Way Countdown," "Bump," "4-in-a-Row," "Math War," "Heads Up" and pattern block puzzles.

Once placed in small groups, students moved to their designated game areas to begin the rotation.

The game of "Heads Up" focused on addition and mental math.

One student gave clues while two other students held a card (without looking) up to their forehead.

The clue-giver added the two cards together and gave the other students a subtraction clue to help them guess what their card was.

For instance, if the cards were a 4 and an 8 (totaling 12), the clue-giver might say, "The number you have is 4 less than 12."

The "4-In-a-Row" game involved two students using dice and a numbered playing board.

They rolled two dice, then added or subtracted the numbers, and finally colored in the resulting sum or difference on the board.

The first player to color four numbers in a straight line won the game.

"Math War" was a fast paced game that allowed the students to practice addition.

Two cards were flipped and students quickly added the numbers together.

The first student to correctly call out the total won the round and collected the cards.

In "4-Way Countdown" students rolled two dice and then used addition, subtraction, multiplication or division to create a specific target number.

Students rolled a set of different colored dice in the game "Dice Collection," working hard to collect the same number on all of them through repeated rolling.

To work on spatial reasoning and shapes, students had to solve pattern block puzzles, taking shapes and fitting them back onto the board correctly.

After rotating through the various stations, the students gathered back on the carpet and worked on their number line.

It was a day of lively learning and the students had a blast while building their math skills!
